Those who are without philosophy are like prisoners in a cave.they are in chains and cannot turn around.behind them is a fire and before them the empty cave shut off at the back by a blank wall.on this wall as on a screen. they see their own shadows , and that of things between them and the fire.because they can see nothing else, they think the shadows are the real things. In the end , one man throws off his fetters and gropes his way towards the mouth of the cave.there, for the first time ,he sees the light of the sun, shining on the full-blooded things of the real world.
he goes back into the cave to tell his fellow creatures about his findings, and tries to show them that theirs is no more thou a dim reflection of reality, a world of mere shadows. but having seen the light of the sun,his sight has become dazzled by its brilliance, and he finds it harder now to make out the shadows.
he tries to show them the way of the light , but to them he seems more stupid tyhan before, and therefore it is no easy task to convince them.
